JAHKONGO "THE AFRICAN WARRIOR" PROFILED

Profile sourced from: JahKongo Music

JAH KONGO also known as THE AFRICAN WARRIOR, was born Mandla Qotsini on 01 July 1985 in Soweto, Jozi. He moved to Cape Town, Khayelitsha with his family when he was a baby and there he fell in love with music from a very young age. He started performing in the church choir singing tenor and enjoyed it greatly. At age 13 he was hanging around a famous local reggae artist known as Mega, and that’s where he met Zorro and Red Stone at Mega’s house, there he fell in love with reggae music. He enjoyed the melody, the harmony and it’s lyrics. So inspired, in the same year, him and friend Thabiso started their first group called Chuck T after Kongo’s then stage name, Chuck, and T from Thabiso. The group did well in local road shows and high school shows.

At that time Jah Kongo’s taste in music was changing and growing further from the usual R’nB sound to ska and reggae sounds of Toots and The Maytals, Lucky Dube, The Wailers, Capleton and he later started listening, learning and enjoying local afro-jazz sounds of Hugh Masekela, Mzwake Mbuli, Lebo Mathosa, and Brenda Fassie amongst many.

In 1999 after a chance visit to a Rasta Church with friends while living in Welkom, he started taking bible studies on a daily basis and learned more about Rastafari. The Rasta way of life changed his perspective of life and took his music to a different direction to what Chuck T used to do.

In 2001 back in Cape Town, Jah Kongo started a group called DUNGEON AFFAIR with friends Blaq Supreme, Judgement Son, Mic Herbalist and Judahka. They were a young group who had a vision of becoming a household name. The group did so well, performing all over Cape Town’s clubs and major festivals. In 2003 it had grown to a 20-member group consisting of artists such as Black Coal, Lady Sunshine and D.J. Sensi. After 6 good years with Dungeon Affair, Jah Kongo went solo and started his own company called Queen Sheba Entertainment (QSE) hosting shows such as the annual Ladies Night and Lions Fest, which coincides with Jah Kongo's birthday.

Jah Kongo worked with Scratch Israel, Ricky Bushula and Isaac kalako on producing his December 2008 EP called, All I want. The EP featured artists such as Maxhoseni and Black B on a love song called My love for you. He featured Scratch Israel on two tracks called Seven Days and I don’t care. Baby Scrujah on Hustlin and Big Head on Crime, Jah Kongo marketed the EP himself and it has sold ova a thousand copies since it’s release date. The EP exposed Jah Kongo to a wider audience, taking him on national tours and negotiating international deals.

He has shared a stage with his childhood hero’s such as Jamaica’s I Qulah, Anthony B and London based artists, Prince Mallachi and Peter Spence, also with the late sis Brenda Fassie. He has also performed with South Africa’s most recognised reggae band Azania. He also collaborated with Sista Cassie from USA on two successful tracks called What for and Crime rate too high and also collaborated with Miss Sunshyne from Dublin, Ireland and many more artists. Jah Kongo has worked with France base producer Yoan Minkoff from Major Yo productions. Since the release of the EP, he has collaborated with many more producers and his voice is heard on many mixtapes that are doing well in the streets of Cape Town and Johannesburg.

2012 saw Jah Kongo featuring on his own music video for one of his most beloved song, 1st Night which will be released at a later stage. Another music video for Bambulele is in pre-production. In May he released a mixtape with his long time friends Ras Melody and Xisto called Total Take Over under Coded Records.

Jah Kongo is well loved for his humble personality and his direct approach to matters of life in his music. He is named the African Warrior for good reasons. He’s an inspiration to his community’s youth and hopes to keep uplifting many people, young and old, through his music.

JEREMIAH FYAH ISES "THE REGGAE WARRIOR"

Jeremiah Fyah Ises , born Jeremiah Bongani Mandlazi is a South African Reggae Artist that was raised in a township called Kwa-Thema (Springs ) Ekurhuleni, South Africa.  Fyah Ises got exposed to music at an early age through "Zion Church", a Christian church which he attended until the age of 14 then he decided to heed the calling of becoming Rasta which is where he became a member of the "Nyahbhingi Congregation",  a Rastafarian community that was based in his naighbourhood called Barcelona in Kwa- Thema. He was taught to play a guitar by his fellow brethren named Jan and while he was in high school he became a member of  a group called "King Negus Mlonji" which expose him to the Ragga (Dancehall) type of rhyming. While he was in college he became the President and Director of Social Affairs for the SRC(School Representative Council) where he displayed his leadership abilities which are visible in his music today. He then started to write his own songs which includes songs like " Sensimina" which became big around Open Mic Sessions in and around his neighbourhood, the song was produced by Killah Beats. In 2008 he worked with Red Piano Studios,  recording singles which didn't get much exposure but that never dented his eagarness to achive his goals, he never gave up on his dream. He became part of "H .I .D."  which is a hip-hop group where he was featured in their mix tape called "Skillz Gallery".

Fyah Ises's golden voice speaks directly to the heart and his style of singing is compared to that of Jah Cure and Tarrus Riley.  Jeremiah also referred to as Ises or Jah Bongz or Prophet continued his recording and performance around his neighbourhood, Ekurhuleni (East of Johannesburg) which is where he draws most of his inspiration from and during his journey, he was also strongly inspired by one of the popular musician "BONGO RIOT" who is also from Ekurhuleni. Fyah continued with his music journey and worked with "Cycle Of Life" recording singles and mix tapes which is where he did a hit track called "Beat the Congo drum", it features Mafeshini a Rap Artist, by then you couldn't deny he was on his way to success though in 2010 he felt that music was not enough to keep up with the high standards of living which the youth faces so he went and looked for a job at a restaurant,  while working there, the music edge kept growing stronger so he started writting songs again.

His 1st radio interview was with "EKfm" a community radio station based in Tsakane", Ekurhuleni then in 2012 he met with Shamrock Guitor(Producer) through Lwazi and Linda (Friends), Ises and Shamrock decided to come up with a project as they complimented each other musically which they called the album" Uhambo " (The Journey) written by Fyah Ises produced by Shamrock Guitor which only features 1 female artist "Nonhlanhla Madlose" which he discovered. The album features a hits like "Mama" and "Never go low" which is currently receiving airplay on one of the biggest Radio Station in the country (Yfm 99.2). Ises has worked with Blazing Fyah from Senegal, More Life Productions from California where he did a track on the "Herb Family Riddim" and it features big names like Sizzla, Tefflon, Jabalance, Khalali Blaxx and more. He has performed along side Bongo Riot,  Jahkongo, Ras Melody, Fyah Priest and more,  Ises has continued to move and rock the audience by his performance on stage he has also worked with Kepra Ithiopia Sound, Blazing Fyah Studios from South Africa he is quoted saying "MUZIK IS THE SOURCE OF LIFE, IT IS THE 1ST LANGUAGE THAT KEEPS US TOGETHER IN LOVE & UNITY". He is currently working with QueenSoulVibe_SA and they are responsible for his "Uhambo -The Journey" Album Pre-launch which will take place on the 27th of July 2013 at Kingston On 4th in Melville, Johannesburg. The event is powered by Ginjah Roots Sound..

LISTEN & SHARE OF THE WEEK

In the age of smart phones and tablets, people want things to happen in the palms of their hands without even having to struggle looking for them. This is weekly feature (Listen & Share of the Week) is aimed at promoting South African Reggae & Dancehall artists by getting their music to the people via download/listen  & share links so basically this would help artists to find a home for their music where it will be accessible to South Africans and the rest of the world. It is important for our artists to have sense of belonging whenever they perform at local events where people would sing along to their music as there is minimal airplay in our mainstream radio stations. This will also encourage artists to have more of their material out to the public.

"RASTA GOT SWAG"

Over the years there has been a stigma surrounding the image of Rastafarians within the communities they live in. Their way of dressing was perceived as “boring” and “dull” but throughout the years that has changed as the younger generation of the Rastafarian community has made it their responsibility to keep the Royalty image alive so to dismiss the stereotypes because His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen were elegant in their style of dressing which was a way of upholding their Royal image and Rastafarians follow in their footsteps thus it's only wise to make sure they live up to the the standard of Royalty. The younger Rastafarian generation is catching up with the latest fashion trends without losing their identity though which has been visible amongst the men and women in the recent times.
These pictures demonstrate the day to day fashion sense of young Rasta men and women in South Africa.

In an essence the dress code hasn’t changed because one would realise that the women are still wearing long skirts and dresses and wrapping their heads with turbans or have their beautiful dreadlocks flowing down their backs which is an ancient African practice that symbolises respect for oneself and it has been kept alive by the Rastafarians and no offence is intended to those who doesn’t find it important to be in long skirts or dresses yet consider themselves Rastafarians.  The Rasta women would wear beautiful long ankle-length skirts or dresses and with others, the skirt may be a little bit shorter and go just below the knee, they would complement this with wrist, neck and ear accessories.  The earrings are quite eye catching as most of them are custom/special colourful designs which has a distinctive African personality to them. Ooohh, see how these women marry their clothes with the beautiful hand bags and shoes, damn that’s Royalty right there. This image is fast catching up with the latest trends of the streets which changed the perception the community had about the image of the Rastafarian women.

The dress code has also changed drastically where there is a distinctive trend following amongst young Rastafarian men.   One will notice that there is a lot more of Rastafarians wearing the latest type of blazers, cardigans, rolled-up chino, bowties, skinny jeans, etc.  The high-top sneakers, ankle boots with jeans tucked inside, have also invaded the Rastafarian men fashion space just like they did to the rest of the community.  They are following these trends yet keeping their own identity because you will find some with wrapped turbans or hats bearing Red, Gold & Green colours on their heads so that they are very distinctive amongst everyone else.

DJ TANDARING DAWTA MIXES (Listen & Share)

"Tandaring Dawta real nameThandeka Shabalala is a female dancehall & Reggae dj/shelector, based in Jhb. Her career as a selector stretches back to her high school days back in the 90s, when artist like Shabba, Beenie, Bounty Killa, Capleton, Sizzla, Antony B, Buju Banton etc. were penetrating the young dancehall industry at that time. Being the first female reggae/dancehall dj in Jhb behind da decks, was a choice motivated by her love for the music. Right through high school without fail on weekends, she was moving around ghetto to ghetto playing in dub sessions from Soweto, Vosloo, Sebokeng, Yeoville, and many other places in & around Jhb. Cutting Edge Sound System (now called Crucial Hi-Fi) led by Elder Jah Crucial gave her the platform to learn the workings of being a dj. Even after high school, she knew her calling was in the music industry, so she went on further by studing sound engineering. After completing her studies, the motherhood bug bit her which resulted in her being hiatus from deejaying. With her daughter being a little older, she has returned to her 1st love, deejaying. Now with an objective of spreading and being in the forefront of promoting reggae and dancehall music in Africa across. “I strongly believe in the power of music to educate, elevate, and entertain at times, can't imagine a world without dancehall and reggae music - MUSIC period!!"
