DJ SMASH A.K.A. JAH SMASH

DJ SMASH  A.K.A.  JAH SMASH

Thapelo Brian Sibambo known as Dj Smash or Jah Smash was born in Naledi, Soweto. His love for music began at a very young age in the early 90s where he fell in love with  Hip Hop music through the influence of the popular artists such as 2 Pac, KRS 1, Busta Rhymes, Notorious B.I.G. and more.  Dj Smash’s passion for music grew more when he started developing love for Reggae Music in the Mid 90’s which was something completely different to the Hip Hop music he was used to then but this never came as a surprise as he was surrounded by his Rastafarian friends who listened to the genre at that time.

Dj Smash began to follow this way of life (Rastafarianism) that’s where he started learning more about Reggae music and the culture as he went to different events known to the Rastafarian community as “Rub-A-Dub or Dance”.  He started collecting Reggae music and the collection grew more and more. Around 2005, Dj Smash met a friend who had access to Dj equipment but didn’t have enough music to start this hobby so he made an agreement with this friend of his that he will bring his music collection and in exchange he must teach him how to dj, this is when the bug bit him. He started playing at the Rub-A-Dubs which where only held on Sundays and occasionally on Saturday nights. His skills grew and he started networking with different Djs whom were already in the scene at that time.

In 2007, realizing that the scene is advancing  as now people within the Rastafarian community and outside(Non Rastafarians) where starting to host parties due to the influence of the Sub-Genre called ‘Dancehall’ which is more up-tempo and more ‘youthful’,  Dj Smash started hosting ‘Dances’ alongside his friend Dj Iceman at Iceman’s house which were attended by a large number of the community members from all walks of life but due to the complaints from some of the community members, they had to end their sessions.  These sessions later in 2010, found a home at the popular venue in Soweto called Rockerfella Soweto which is located in Molapo, Soweto. The events hosted popular Djs in the Reggae industry such as Dj Fanta Jozi, Dj Pepe, G Dread and more. He hosted Pre-Parties for popular Jamaican artists such as Anthony B and Capleton. These events had people from all walks of life flooding to the venue every Thursday nights to witness these amazing unusual events.

Dj Smash has played alongside popular names in the South African Reggae industry such as Dj Fanta,  Dj Pepe just to name a few.  In 2010 he became the host Dj for the 1st African Dancehall Queen Show held at Baseline in Newtown which became a success home and abroad.  Dj Smash is rated amongst the best Djs in the Reggae industry because of his mixing abilities and his creativity when it comes to mixing.
